Our Retaining Wall Services

Our Retaining Wall Services

We are retaining wall specialists — not general landscapers, not fencing contractors, not earthmoving companies that include walls as one of a dozen services. Every project we take on is a retaining wall project, built for Blue Mountains conditions: steep terrain, Hawkesbury Sandstone geology, high rainfall, and BMCC regulatory requirements.

Our service range covers the full spectrum from single-panel repairs to large engineered sandstone walls on prestige properties.

Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls

The most versatile and popular choice for Blue Mountains residential properties. Precast concrete sleeper panels slot between galvanised steel H-posts set in concrete footings. Engineered H-post spacing and spans handle the structural loads generated by steep terrain. With correct drainage installation — aggregate backfill and ag pipe — these walls last 50 to 80 years.

Concrete sleeper walls are particularly well-suited to:

  • Replacing failing timber sleeper walls from the 1970s and 1980s
  • Straight-run walls on sloped residential blocks
  • Jobs requiring DA-exempt or CDC pathway approvals
  • Projects where long-term durability in a high-rainfall environment is the primary concern

Timber Sleeper Wall Replacement

The Blue Mountains is experiencing a wave of timber sleeper wall failures as the homes built in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s reach the end of their original retaining wall lifespan. Timber sleeper walls in this region typically last 25 to 40 years — many are now 40 to 50 years old and showing serious signs of failure.

We specialise in the safe removal of old failing timber walls and replacement with concrete sleeper or sandstone alternatives. The replacement process always includes a complete drainage upgrade — addressing the missing drainage element that contributed to the original wall’s deterioration.

Natural Sandstone Retaining Walls

For heritage properties, prestige lifestyle blocks, and properties where aesthetic quality genuinely matters, natural Hawkesbury Sandstone is the premium retaining wall material in the Blue Mountains. Locally sourced, with a 100-plus year lifespan when correctly built, and an aesthetic that belongs in the mountains landscape in a way that concrete and block simply cannot replicate.

We build both dry-stone sandstone walls (traditional gravity construction) and mortared sandstone walls (for structural applications requiring engineering). Heritage approvals in Katoomba and Leura can sometimes be easier to obtain with sandstone than with concrete or block products.

Block and Besser Retaining Walls

Concrete masonry (besser block) walls offer a cost-effective structural solution for retaining applications where heritage requirements are lower and long straight runs need a simple, reliable product. Block walls are well-suited to Springwood, Blaxland, Glenbrook, and the lower Blue Mountains where modern construction standards apply without the upper-mountains heritage overlay complexity.

Block walls can be rendered or capped for improved appearance and are a practical choice for boundary retaining situations, driveway cuts, and behind-the-house walls not visible from the street.

Slope Stabilisation

Not every unstable slope is best fixed with a retaining wall. In some situations — severely degraded hillsides, active geological movement, slopes adjacent to drainage lines, or terrain with insufficient rock or soil depth for footing installation — slope stabilisation approaches are more appropriate than hard wall construction.

We assess steep-slope sites carefully before recommending any construction approach. Where slope stabilisation is the right answer, we work with geotextile systems, drainage improvements, vegetative cover, and geotechnical engineering referrals. Where the slope genuinely needs a wall, we’ll tell you that too.
